5 health risks of apple cider vinegar

Medical experts warn that excessive or improper use of apple cider vinegar can pose significant health risks, including eroding tooth enamel and causing indigestion.

While some people promote apple cider vinegar as a remedy for blood sugar control, weight loss, and heart and skin health, researchers and doctors emphasize the importance of using it safety.

1. Irritating the esophagus

According to health news platform webMD, apple cider vinegar is highly acidic and can irritate the esophagus (the tube connecting the throat and stomach) if  consumed undiluted or in large quantities.

2. Eroding tooth enamel

The acidic nature of undiluted apple cider vinegar can erode tooth enamel over time, raising the risk of dental issues.

3. Causing digestive problems

Additionally, apple cider vinegar can cause indigestion or nausea in some people, especially when consumed on an empty stomach.

If symptoms like nausea or vomiting occur, health professionals advise discontinuing its use.

4. Interacting with and limiting the effects of certain medications

As per The New York Times, apple cider vinegar can interact with diabetes medications, heart medications, and diurecics.

5. Not suitable for people with specific health conditions

Apple cider vinegar may lower potassium levels in the blood, which is especially concerning for individuals with hypokalemia, a condition characterized by low potassium levels.

Those with kidney disease should also avoid overusing apple cider vinegar, as their kidneys may struggle to process its high acidity.

To reduce these risks, health professionals recommend diluting apple cider vinegar in water, using a straw to limit exposure to teeth, and incorporating it into food recipes, such as dressings or marinades, which generally do not have the same corrosive effects. Limiting intake to no more than two to four tablespoons daily is also advised.
